Jeff Hale

Program Leader

Liberal Studies

What do you see as the advantages of taking classes online?

Convenience is the advantage that most people immediately recognize with online education. The student controls the schedule for learning. The advantage that may not be apparent to new students is the individual attention and fast feedback from faculty, as well as the opportunity to interact with students from different backgrounds and different regions of the country.

Why do you feel it is important to support online learning by being the program leader for Liberal Studies?

Online learning provides place-bound students with access to university learning opportunities to improve their careers or to gain new knowledge from the comfort of their own homes or offices.

What has been the biggest surprise to you about online learning?

The sense of community that can be created within the online classroom. People are more willing to share their thoughts and opinions online, and there is an opportunity to hear from everyone.

What's one thing about yourself you'd like distance students to know?

Distance courses are not an after-thought or simply another version of the campus class, they are uniquely designed for the opportunities of an online learning environment. Preparing my distance course forces me to think about learning in new ways which leads to improvements in both online and on-campus course.
