Sheila Allen - Goal to become a teacher

B.S. Liberal Studies
Middletown, CA

Sheila Allen

What does completing your degree mean to you? How do you feel it will improve your life and career?
Finishing my degree will make it possible for me to pursue a career in teaching, something I discovered I wanted to do after working part time as a teacher's aide at an elementary school. Being able to finish my degree is something I always wanted to do. I will be fulfilling a goal I made. Now I feel like I can accomplish anything I set my mind to if I commit myself and work hard.

Why did you choose to complete your degree online through OSU Extended Campus? What did you like about this method of education?
As a mother of three children, I did not want my educational goals to take away from being around for my children. Also, I live in a community where I would have had to commute a significant distance to attend a nearby college.  I researched to find a college that had online classes where I could finish a traditional degree. I liked being able to do my class participation on my own schedule. Another advantage to online classes is that it gave me an opportunity to participate more in discussions than I might have if I was in a regular classroom because I enjoy writing.

Did you have an instructor or advisor who was influential in helping you succeed as a distance student?

I felt like all of my instructors were influential in helping me succeed as they were all very well-organized and clear with what they expected. Most importantly, they made the classes interesting and pushed me to enhance my understanding of what I was studying.

What will your Ecampus degree allow you to do that you were unable to do before?
I will be able to seek teaching credentials and pursue a career in teaching, which I think will be a fulfilling and rewarding career for me.
