2012 OSU Ecampus graduates

Haley Thornton – A series of hardships can't stop this grad's mission

B.S. in Environmental Sciences
Bend, Ore.

Haley ThorntonWhat does earning your OSU degree mean to you?
My degree means a sense of accomplishment. I had gone back to school in 2006 and was derailed by a death in the family, having a child, my husband becoming disabled, and working a full-time job. Through it all, I persevered and will have my degree to show for my hard work and dedication.

Why did you choose to complete your degree online through OSU Extended Campus? What did you like about this method of education?
I work full time, have a child and a disabled husband, which makes traditional classes impossible for me to attend. The online environment gave me the flexibility to complete the coursework in the time I had available.

Did you have an instructor or advisor who was influential in helping you succeed as a distance student?
Dawn Marie Gaid and Erin Lieuallen were extremely helpful. They were patient with me and answered all of my questions, straightening out my direction when it went off path.

What will your Ecampus degree allow you to do that you were unable to do before?
I currently work for a federal agency, and while it is a great job, I am passionate about the sciences, and especially the environment. I am hoping that this will provide me the opportunity to work for an agency that directly impacts the environment around me.
