Maria Iñez Bautista Diaz – A series of firsts for immigrants' daughter

Maria Inez Bautista DiazB.A. Liberal Studies
Madras, Ore.

What does earning your OSU degree mean to you?
As a first-generation college student, earning my OSU degree means so much to me. Words cannot explain. I am the daughter of immigrants that did not have the opportunity to finish elementary school. I am the first person in my entire family to earn a college degree. By earning my degree I will have proven to my daughter and family that any dream is possible as long as you give it your all and put in your best effort.

Why did you choose to complete your degree online through OSU Ecampus? What did you enjoy about this method of education?
I chose to complete my degree through Ecampus because of my busy life. I am a mother, wife, daughter and full-time employee. It made sense to pursue my dream of earning my degree by taking advantage of the flexibility that Ecampus offers. I truly enjoyed being able to take my classes on my own time instead of having to work everything else around school.

Did you have an instructor or advisor who was influential in helping you succeed as a distance student?
In a way all my instructors were influential. They all encouraged me to think deeper and not just scratch the surface when I learn but dig deeper and search for the knowledge that I need.

What will your Ecampus degree allow you to do that you were unable to do before?
My degree will allow me to continue in the pursuit of my career. Upon obtaining my bachelor's degree I will immediately begin my master's program that will allow me to prepare for teacher licensure. This will not only improve my life; it will improve the life of the people that have motivated me and supported me, my wonderful daughter, husband and family.
