Oregon State University climate change program provides vital training online

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Oregon State University this winter will introduce a fully online Graduate Certificate in Forests and Climate Change that equips professionals with training and skills to manage forests amid rising global concerns.

This 19-credit certificate program is one of the only of its kind in the nation that covers the impacts, adaptation to and mitigation of climate change. It is offered by OSU’s College of Forestry and delivered by Oregon State Ecampus, a national leader in online education.

“This graduate certificate program offers new knowledge that will aid professionals in natural resources management, the forest product industry and those in academia as they seek to perform their jobs better and combat climate change,” said Badege Bishaw, the program’s director and a senior instructor in OSU’s Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society.

Students in the program will examine the theory and application of climate change science. The curriculum provides knowledge in disciplines relevant to climate change, notably ecology, ecophysiology, genetics, forest modeling, economics and policy.

The subject matter is central to Oregon State’s mission to produce strategies and solutions for the most important and intractable issues facing the world. The university is home to multiple climate change centers, programs and projects that are supported by agencies such as NOAA, NSF and the U.S. Department of the Interior.

OSU is also recognized as one of the world’s top universities for forestry, ranking ninth in a 2015 international survey of more than 3,000 universities.

Winter classes at Oregon State begin Jan. 4, 2016. Visit the Ecampus website for information on how to enroll in the forests and climate change certificate program.
