Oregon State’s new Master of Public Policy online degree program aims to create future policy leaders

August 11, 2016

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University’s new online Master of Public Policy (MPP) degree program aims to train the next generation of policy leaders to design, manage and advocate for better policy solutions.

Grounded with an interdisciplinary foundation and virtually identical in content and pedagogy to Oregon State’s successful on-campus program, the online MPP program is uniquely positioned to integrate groundbreaking science into emerging policies, practices and understandings of the world that will impact and influence local, regional and international policy decisions.

The program is designed for working professionals in the public and nonprofit sectors, including those looking to advance their career or transition from the private service to public service, or recent graduates wanting to pursue policy careers.

“Many public and nonprofit organizations require a relevant master’s degree for advancement in the organization,” said MPP program lead Brent Steel. “The MPP is one such degree that can facilitate advancement in a wide variety of public and nonprofit organizations.”

Delivered online by Oregon State Ecampus, a national leader in online education, the 62-credit program is one of only a few accredited MPP programs offered online nationally. It is home to Oregon State’s world-class scientists who are working on issues significant to 21st century citizens.

“As populations continue to become more connected and interdependent, these issues promise to affect us more broadly, more quickly and with more impact than ever before. New forms of governance and problem solving are being tested and studied at OSU to address these issues,” Steel said.

The program is nationally accredited by the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration, and requires the same curriculum and learning outcomes on campus and online. It is taught by the same faculty members who teach on-campus courses in economics, political science and sociology in OSU’s School of Public Policy in the College of Liberal Arts.

Students can choose to focus on four areas of concentration, including energy policy, social policy, rural policy and environmental policy with an emphasis in marine policy – one of Oregon State’s strengths as a sea grant university.

A strong ally and advocate for students from diverse backgrounds, the MPP online program offers all students access to two international field schools where they can participate in a wide range of interdisciplinary inquiry on policy that affects diverse communities.

MPP students can also design programs of study with faculty from other OSU colleges, including the colleges of Agricultural Sciences; Education; Engineering; Forestry; Public Health and Human Sciences; Science; and Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences.

Students can apply to the program online and can begin any term. Fall term at Oregon State begins Sept. 21.
