Program Overview

OSU Extended Campus offers a non-credit course in Discrimination and the Oregon Educator. This course consists of a packet of reading material (approx. 60 pages with eight essay questions you must respond to) that is mailed to your home for completion. Once you have completed the course, return your essay questions along with the affidavit to Professor O'Malley. Please allow for approximately three weeks to receive your certificate of completion.

What's New in 2009-2010?

Beginning September 1, 2009, the ORELA, Protecting Student and Civil Rights in the Educational Environment Examination, is required of all candidates seeking Oregon licensure, including authorizations at the early childhood, elementary, and/or high school levels as a teacher, personnel specialist, administrator, or school nurse.

The Discrimination and the Oregon Educator course is also now being offered as a preparatory class for the Protecting Student and Civil Rights in the Educational Environment test.

Effective Immediately

Students who are currently enrolled in Oregon State University licensure programs can still meet this requirement by completing the Discrimination and the Oregon Educator course. Effective September 1, 2010, this course will no longer be accepted and will be replaced by the ORELA Civil Rights And Equity in Education subtest offered through the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission TSPC). Please contact the (TSPC) for more information: 503-378-3586 or www.tspc.state.or.us.

To verify which option of this course best fits your needs please refer to the "Who Is Required to Take the Tests?" page on the ORELA website.
