Graduate Certificate
in Geographic Information Science - Online
High-resolution multibeam bathymetry and GIS processing were used to create this visualization of the East Pacific Rise, 500 miles offshore of Acapulco, Mexico.
In cooperation with OSU's Department of Geosciences, Extended Campus is pleased to offer a 19-credit online
graduate certificate in Geographic Information Science (GIScience).
Program overview
This certificate is ideal for working professionals, who already possess a baccalaureate degree, who wish to reinforce or upgrade their current skills in order to be more competitive in the rapidly changing field of GIScience.
To see how this program incorporates the growing field of GIScience, visit the GIScience curriculum page for details on course work and scheduling.
What is GIScience? The use of GIScience technologies, including, but not limited to GIS (Geographic Information Systems), has become pervasive throughout the scientific community, natural resource management, government, industry, and business. Advancements in geographic information science are having broad effects in improving day-to-day tasks throughout all sectors of society, from tracking the spread of pollutants to navigating automobiles and emergency vehicles along optimal routes through busy cities.
Preparing participants for the workforce
Students participating in the program will be competitive and competent across broad disciplines in geographic information science. Students completing the certificate program will gain vital competency relevant to today's workforce in the areas of geospatial information technology. An already large $5 billion U.S. market in GIScience technologies is projected to increase to $30 billion within the span of the next few years, even with the economic downturn. The Department of Labor's Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH 2006-07 Ed.) projects that employment in these fields is expected to grow between 9 and 14 percent through 2014.
Convenient online delivery
The GIScience Graduate Certificate is delivered online by OSU's experienced faculty in the Department of Geosciences. Online course delivery allows students and professionals to access assignments, lectures and other learning materials on their own schedule while still balancing work, family and personal commitments.
