What is GIScience?
High-resolution multibeam bathymetry was used to create this representation of offshore San Diego.
The use of GIScience technologies, including, but not limited to GIS (Geographic Information Systems), has become pervasive throughout the scientific community, natural resource management, government, industry, and business. Advancements in geographic information science are having broad effects in improving day-to-day tasks throughout all sectors of society, from tracking the spread of pollutants to navigating automobiles and emergency vehicles along optimal routes through busy cities.
Professional Certificate in GIScience
OSU currently offers undergraduate, graduate and professional certificates in GIScience. The Professional Certificate in GIScience is designed to provide in-career professionals or continuing students with an introduction to GIScience technologies. The courses offered may expand existing skills or prepare participants for a new career working with GIS, remote sensing, or other geospatial technologies.

The GIScience professional certificate program requires a baccalaureate degree in any field from a college or university, or an associate’s degree in GIS from a community college. This non-degree certificate consists of 13 regular credit hours as well as a selection of non-credit courses and online modules from OSU QuickSkills and the ESRI Virtual Campus.
This program fits into the lifestyle of busy professionals; the GIS track can be completed online, while the Cartography and Remote Sensing tracks are delivered via online and on-campus courses.
