Geography is the study of patterns on the earth caused by humans and nature. Since many types of such patterns have formed and are constantly forming, geography encompasses very diverse fields, including:

  • environmental sciences or physical geography
  • nature-society interactions
  • methods and models for measuring and interpreting patterns on the earth
  • spatial distributions and patterns of human activities or human geography

Geography investigates and answers many practical questions of daily importance, as well as those that are more theoretical in nature. For example, geographic concepts and data help explain why location determines property value, how changes in ocean temperatures affect climate and what causes landscapes to differ across regions.
