Student Rights and Responsibilities

The Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards supports the mission of the university by providing programs and services designed to meet the educational and developmental needs of students in relation to community standards, civility, accountability, diversity, respect and truth.

Specifically, the Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards:

• is part of the Office of the Dean of Student Life
• serves as central coordinating office for violations of University student conduct regulations
• may initiate the conduct review process with students in response to information received indicating the student may be responsible for violation of student conduct regulations
• follows due process procedures
• strives to assist students with management of their relationships with the institution
• maintains student conduct disciplinary and academic dishonesty records
• compiles conduct related statistics for reporting purposes
• explains and enforces student conduct regulations, policies and procedures
• participates fully with the university's Critical Incident Response Team and the Sexual Assault Response and Prevention Alliance.
• serves with and supports the Student Conduct Committee

Ecampus students are held accountable to the same Student Conduct Regulations that apply to all on-campus students. The most common violations for Ecampus students are classroom disruption and academic dishonesty.

Classroom Disruption

Classroom disruption whether face to face or online in the form of disrespectful, rude and threatening communications will not be tolerated. Refer to OAR 576-015-0015(1) and OSU Computer use and misuse policy. Online communications adhere to the same standard as what you would reasonably say in a classroom on campus. Classroom disruption is a violation of the student conduct regulations, and this includes disruptive behavior due to alcohol use. An instructor may report disruptive behavior and the office of student conduct will initiate the student conduct review process.

Academic Dishonesty

Academic dishonesty is defined as an intentional act of deception in which a student seeks to claim credit for the work of another person or uses unauthorized materials or fabricated information in any academic work. Students are expected to be honest and ethical in their academic work. When in doubt, always ask your instructor.

Academic dishonesty includes:

• Cheating - use or attempted use of unauthorized materials, information or study aids or an act of deceit by which a student attempts to misrepresent mastery of academic effort or information.
• Fabrication - falsification or invention of any information.
• Assisting - helping another commit an act of academic dishonesty.
• Tampering - altering or interfering with evaluation instruments and documents.
• Plagiarism - representing the word or ideas of another person as one's own OR presenting someone else's words, ideas, artistry or data as one's own.

Evidence of academic dishonesty in an OSU course may result in a grade of "F" on the examination/assignment that involved cheating and/or an "F" in the course. Your instructor will notify the office the Office of Student Conduct of any suspected academic dishonesty by sending an academic dishonesty report form.
