Complete Master Gardener Basic Training from the comfort of your home
OSU is now offering an online version of our popular Master Gardener Program
This joint Oregon State University (OSU) Extended Campus and Extension Service program educates Oregonians about the art and science of growing and caring for plants. This program also facilitates the training of a highly-educated group of volunteers. These volunteers extend sustainable gardening information to their communities through education and outreach programs.
The course is hosted in OSU's Blackboard (Bb) Learning Portal System. In addition to readings and lectures, participants in this online classroom will engage in discussions, quizzes, an exam and self- and peer-review of completed assignments.
The new online Master Gardener basic training course's topics include:
- Basic botany and entomology
- Integrated pest management and pesticide safety
- Soils, fertilizers and composting
- Ornamental, herbaceous plants and woody plants
- Vegetable, indoor and container gardening
- Sustainable landscaping
- Plant pathology
Participants taking the online Master Gardener basic training can choose one of two options:
- Option 1: Participants can receive a Certificate of Home Horticulture upon successful completion of the online course. Fall 2008 session starts September 8 - December 5. Cost: $400.
- Option 2: Participants can earn a Master Gardener badge with continued training in their local or county Master Gardener Program. Here, participants will apply the concepts that they learned in the basic training course through community volunteer opportunities. To become a certified OSU Master Gardener, 40-70 hours of on-site volunteer practicum is required. This option will debut during the winter 2009 session in January. Cost: $300. For more general information on the OSU Master Gardener Program, please visit the main OSU Master Gardener site.
