New degree program developed to analyze, impact environmental issues

CORVALLIS, Ore. – A new online degree program offered by Oregon State University Ecampus will help students worldwide gain a better understanding of the policies and economics that shape environmental and resource issues.

Distance students can pursue a bachelor of science in environmental economics and policy beginning this fall, giving nontraditional learners access to the same work of OSU’s agricultural and resource economics faculty as on-campus students.

“We have some widely known and active teachers who also do very interesting research in these areas,” said OSU assistant professor Penny Diebel. “Being able to share their work in classrooms across the state and beyond in an online format will be a great benefit to distance students.”

The new program will focus both on the development of strong economic skills and analysis of environmental and natural resource stewardship, and could offer many career opportunities, from investment banking to agricultural policy.

“Businesses and agencies must now have some knowledge of environmental or resource issues because it’s an intricate part of the way everyone does business, whether they’re producing something or in government,” Diebel said. “This program will give our students a solid training in how these fields are linked together and how to analyze them.”
