These are all the well-known staples of a college classroom.<\/p>\n<p>At least, that\u2019s what Jordan Levi came to expect of her learning environments while enrolled online in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/online-degrees\/undergraduate\/fw\/?utm_campaign=ag-sciences-fw-news-post&amp;utm_source=ecampus-news&amp;utm_medium=affiliate&amp;utm_content=experiential-learning\">Oregon State University Ecampus fisheries, wildlife, and conservation sciences bachelor\u2019s degree program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"textBox\" style=\"width: 30%;\">\n<h2>Pursue a career in a growing industry<\/h2>\n<p>In Oregon, occupations related to natural resources are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/portland\/news\/10\/15\/why-oregons-natural-resources-jobs-will-thrive.html?s=print\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">projected to increase more than 11% over the next decade,<\/a> according to the Oregon Employment Department.<\/p>\n<p>Earn your fisheries, wildlife, and conservation sciences degree to open the doors into a thriving job market and protect wild species and their habitats along the way.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"button\"><a title=\"Learn more about Oregon State's fisheries and wildlife sciences program online\" href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/online-degrees\/undergraduate\/fw\/careers.htm?utm_campaign=ag-sciences-fw-news-post&amp;utm_source=ecampus-news&amp;utm_medium=affiliate&amp;utm_content=experiential-learning\">Explore career paths<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p>When she first began her postsecondary education in Maine, she quickly discovered that neither the university nor the campus-based learning format she\u2019d chosen were right for her. And settling for less than the best was not a part of her plan.<\/p>\n<p>An avid outdoorswoman, Jordan realized she wanted a career that would allow her to protect the wild spaces that were such a beloved part of her life, and she wanted a degree program that would allow her to spend as much time in them as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, the next step was to enroll in Oregon State\u2019s fisheries, wildlife, and conservation sciences program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOSU was a perfect fit for me,\u201d says Jordan, a resident of Old Forge, New York. \u201cThey have such a high-ranked online program, and I felt that online fit me better because it gave me flexibility and I could still travel or work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time, she knew she\u2019d made the right decision.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"smartquote\">&#8220;<\/span>The program provided the flexibility and convenience I wanted without sacrificing active and experiential learning.<span class=\"smartquote\">&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The structured class discussions made possible by the online format allowed her more personal interactions with her classmates and instructors than her previous face-to-face courses.<\/p>\n<p>Those conversations with her classmates who were located across the nation and the world opened up a global knowledge base of fisheries and wildlife management and conservation techniques.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1034\" class=\"wp-caption wp-caption-250 alignright\" style=\"width: 250px\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1034 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/assets\/Jordan-Levi-body.jpg?resize=250%2C250&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Fisheries and wildlife sciences alumna Jordan Levi stands in a field and holds a brown mallard duck which she banded and released as part of her work with the DEC.\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">As a fish and wildlife technician with the DEC, Jordan banded and released the mallard duck pictured above. &#8220;My hard work in school really paid off and now I&#8217;m able to put the knowledge I gained at OSU into practice in the field,&#8221; she says.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI could learn how management happens in Oregon versus New York versus Asia and all over the country and the world,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>With Oregon State Ecampus, the world became Jordan\u2019s classroom, and experiential learning was the compass that led her.<\/p>\n<p>During her time as a student, she interned with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) as an assistant forest ranger, developing the public-facing skills she needed to thrive in her field. A second internship at the Green Lake National Fish Hatchery in Ellsworth, Maine, gave her practice in hatchery management and Atlantic salmon conservation.<\/p>\n<p>A remote field trip for one of her classes required her to join a professional birder to practice identification skills, which quickly landed her a post-graduation job as a bird research technician in New York. Once there, she conducted bird behavior studies and point counts as well as bat and mammal studies.<\/p>\n<p>Since graduating in June, Jordan\u2019s career prospects have continued to blossom.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s currently working as a fish and wildlife technician for the New York State DEC and has positions lined up where she\u2019ll gain further experience at a fish hatchery, and she\u2019ll also monitor furbearer populations in the Adirondack Mountains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese opportunities would not be possible without my degree from Oregon State,\u201d she says. \u201cThe program provided the flexibility and convenience I wanted without sacrificing active and experiential learning.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\"><\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 3<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute read<\/span><\/span>New textbooks, classmates from all over the world, the cover of the forest, calls from birds unseen, the fresh smell of soil (and sometimes fish).
