Like all good dads, he wants the best for his three children. He knows that their best chance to lead successful lives is for them to earn college degrees when the time comes.<\/p>\n<p>And like all good dads, Todd knows that if he\u2019s going to hold his kids to a certain standard, he needs to lead by example.<br \/>\n<!-- video sidebar start --><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-caption\">\n<div><a class=\"fancybox-media playbox thumbnail-video\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QLl-YkuWp7k&amp;feature=youtu.be\" rel=\"media-gallery\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/assets\/Todd-Video.jpg?resize=320%2C180&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"Todd Van Hess interview\" width=\"320\" height=\"180\" \/><span class=\"play-button-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/includes\/2012\/images\/play-button-dark.png\" alt=\"Play\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Todd Van Hess says his Oregon State business classes helped him become a better manager in real time while working a full-time job.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>He supplied the best example possible when he walked across a stage at Oregon State University\u2019s annual commencement ceremony and accepted his diploma after earning his degree online through Oregon State Ecampus.<\/p>\n<p>As the saying goes, if you\u2019re gonna talk the talk, you better walk the walk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to set an example that if their dad could do it, so could they,\u201d Todd says. \u201cI know I want my children to go to college and in the future, they\u2019ll need to go to college, so how can I preach that to them without a college degree myself?\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Finding support and flexibility as an online learner<\/h3>\n<p>Earning a degree while raising a family and working full time is easier said than done, but Todd \u2014 backed by unwavering support from his wife, kids, parents and employer \u2014 knew it was possible.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, he knew all the hard work would be worth it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"textBox\" style=\"width: 30%;\">\n<h2>3 success tips for parents who learn online<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1. Prioritize your time:<\/strong> Determine your other time commitments and when you\u2019re most productive, and <a href=\"http:\/\/success.oregonstate.edu\/sites\/success.oregonstate.edu\/files\/LearningCorner\/Tools\/weekly_calendar.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">use a time worksheet<\/a> to stay organized and on task.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Designate a quiet zone:<\/strong> When it\u2019s time to study, go to a place in your house that is free of distractions, and set boundaries so your family can help you focus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Be an active participant:<\/strong> OSU Ecampus students say they\u2019re most successful when they engage with their instructors and worldwide network of classmates.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>He enrolled in Oregon State\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/online-degrees\/undergraduate\/business\">online bachelor\u2019s degree program in business administration<\/a>. The distance learning experience provided the academic challenge he wanted while also allowing him to maintain stability at home and at work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLearning online fit into my life\u2019s demands,\u201d says Todd, mentioning a preference of many who go to college as a parent. \u201cIt allowed me to spend time with the family, go to work and take the dog for a walk because I wasn\u2019t sitting in a lecture class. It allowed me to attain the same goals without uprooting everyone\u2019s life that we had established already.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Commitment to education leads to job promotion<\/h3>\n<p>Before Todd even completed his degree requirements through OSU Ecampus, he was promoted to a management position for the satellite TV company he\u2019s worked at for more than 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>He had already carved out a nice career for himself without a college degree, but he says that what he learned in his Oregon State business classes have made him a better employee \u2014 one who is primed for advancement and one whose children have witnessed the rewards of dedication to education.<\/p>\n<p>Todd committed to leading at work and at home.
