But Grace Masterjohn didn\u2019t care.<\/p>\n<p>Every minute in the car was well worth the unique experience to present her research poster in front of hundreds of Oregon State University faculty, staff, students and community members.<\/p>\n<div class=\"textBox\" style=\"width: 30%;\">\n<h2>Want to get involved in research?<\/h2>\n<p>There are many opportunities out there for online students. To find the best fit for you, check out our guide to online undergraduate research, which answers common questions and offers expert advice.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"button\"><a title=\"Learn more about joining on-campus research opportunities\" href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/how-to-get-involved-in-research-as-an-online-student\/\">Learn more<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cHow many opportunities do you have to attend an event at your university where you can talk with people who are doing a lot of the same stuff as you are and gain insight and learn from each other while networking?\u201d Grace says.<\/p>\n<p>An Oregon State Ecampus <a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/online-degrees\/undergraduate\/ag\/?utm_source=ecampus-news&amp;utm_medium=affiliate&amp;utm_campaign=agricultural-sciences-research&amp;utm_content=20181105\">agricultural sciences<\/a> student, Grace participated in Oregon State\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/apli.oregonstate.edu\/research\">Celebrating Undergraduate Excellence<\/a> (CUE) event, when she shared her results from an observational study on Alpine dairy farming on a 16th generation farm in Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>Her poster presentation focused on various aspects of organic, grass-fed dairy farming she observed, including how farmers adjust their resources to the climate, convert the pastures to crop land, balance feed and maximize their efficiency and output.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a good amount of people who were interested in my presentation and why I was there,\u201d she says. \u201cThis opportunity was super exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each year, the CUE event showcases the research and creative work of Oregon State\u2019s undergraduate students. This year, four Ecampus students \u2013 Grace and fellow agricultural sciences student Reiden Gustafson, <a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/online-degrees\/undergraduate\/es\/?utm_source=ecampus-news&amp;utm_medium=affiliate&amp;utm_campaign=agricultural-sciences-research&amp;utm_content=20181105\">environmental sciences<\/a> student Zachariah Strife, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/online-degrees\/undergraduate\/women-gender-sexuality-studies\/?utm_source=ecampus-news&amp;utm_medium=affiliate&amp;utm_campaign=agricultural-sciences-research&amp;utm_content=20181105\">women, gender, and sexuality studies<\/a> student Victoria Keenan (who presented her work remotely from the U.K.) \u2013 participated in the event.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"smartquote\">&#8220;<\/span>The skills they learn provide better opportunities once they graduate and mirrors the on-campus experience for students.<span class=\"smartquote\">&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_1061\" class=\"wp-caption wp-caption-250 alignright\" style=\"width: 250px\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1061 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/assets\/Victoria-Keenan-Research-Presentation.jpg?resize=250%2C250&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"A person with curly hair and white headphones looks attentively at a laptop screen where Ecampus anthropology student Victoria Keenan presents her research remotely from the UK at the Celebrating Undergraduate Excellence event.\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">WGSS student <a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/victoria-keenan\/?utm_source=ecampus-news&amp;utm_medium=affiliate&amp;utm_campaign=agricultural-sciences-research&amp;utm_content=20181105\">Victoria Keenan<\/a>, pictured above on the computer screen, presents her research at CUE remotely from the U.K.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI often speak with students who are wanting to get involved and be connected to the university beyond their classes,\u201d says Ecampus Student Success Counselor Bethany Ulman, who helped coordinate travel and logistics for Ecampus students participating in the event. \u201cIn partnering with the Office of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and the Arts, we are helping connect Ecampus students to resources and faculty conducting research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only does it help our online students feel more involved, it also gives them the opportunity to learn and grow in their field. The skills they learn provide better opportunities once they graduate and mirrors the on-campus experience for students. I am happy to be a part of the group that provides those opportunities for students.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>A passion that lasts a lifetime<\/h3>\n<p>Grace\u2019s passion for agriculture stemmed from her younger years participating in a local 4-H program and the Future Farmers of America.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was showing my animals at fairs and part of my job was to literally talk to anyone who was willing to listen to me,\u201d she says. \u201cI really enjoyed teaching people about where their food comes from and talking about whether their community supported agriculture and the difference between organic vs. conventional farming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She wanted to take that passion even further, turning it into the pursuit of a degree and, she hopes, a full-time job working in community development after graduating.<\/p>\n<p>She says she chose to earn her degree online through Oregon State Ecampus because it allowed her the opportunity to refine her skills through a top-ranked education and still work three part-time jobs to provide for herself.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1063\" class=\"wp-caption wp-caption-250 alignright\" style=\"width: 250px\"><img or biology class,\u201d says Grace, who&#8217;s earning her Oregon State degree in agricultural sciences online.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cOne of my goals was to not have to take out any loans to pay for college,\u201d she says. \u201cBy attending OSU online, I am able to save money by staying at home and have more flexibility as I work multiple part-time jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her job as a horticulture researcher, Grace says she often uses what she\u2019s learning in her classes directly in her job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen one of the researchers I\u2019m working with is talking about different kinds of cover crops, nutrient retention in the soil, adding biomass, composition of the soil and how it affects our crop yield, I know exactly what he\u2019s talking about because I learned that in my soil sciences or biology class,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>And she credits the interactive coursework for helping her learn and retain the information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very much a kinesthetic learner, so doing the virtual labs that feature specialized equipment and using the customized lab kits you order through the OSU Bookstore for the biology classes is super helpful to me,\u201d she says. \u201cI love those classes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With less than a year to go before she earns her degree, Grace says she\u2019ll continue to take advantage of the experiential learning opportunities provided to Oregon State\u2019s online students so she\u2019s more prepared once she enters the workforce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a total opportunist, so anybody I meet is a potential opportunity for something more,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen you\u2019re physically or virtually meeting so many people at events like this, you never know what\u2019s going to pop up.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr
