{"id":1152,"date":"2019-03-07T11:02:39","date_gmt":"2019-03-07T19:02:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/?p=1152"},"modified":"2024-07-24T12:48:42","modified_gmt":"2024-07-24T19:48:42","slug":"online-degree-crop-and-soil-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/online-degree-crop-and-soil-science\/","title":{"rendered":"Oregon State\u2019s online degree in crop and soil science emphasizes advanced technologies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"intrinsic-container intrinsic-container-16x9\" style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"744\" height=\"419\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/38IzHTWOWBU?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-caption video-caption-full\">\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students in OSU Ecampus crop science classes can access a virtual greenhouse and explore a 3D environment and discover distinguishing factors that can be used to identify specific plants.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Driven by forward-thinking instructors who teach using a slew of innovative technologies, Oregon State University this spring will begin offering a <a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/online-degrees\/undergraduate\/crop-soil-science\/\">bachelor\u2019s degree in crop and soil science 100 percent online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The program will be the only one of its kind in the nation, and expects to reach an underserved audience of working professionals as well as place-bound students in rural areas who have limited access to higher education opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re always on the lookout for new and improved ways to reach our distance students, regardless of where they reside \u2013 be that a big city with no access to soil like LA, or remote wilderness in Alaska,\u201d said program lead Adam Lindsley, an instructor of crop and soil sciences in Oregon State\u2019s College of Agricultural Sciences. \u201cOur teaching techniques, materials and technology allow us to share the wealth of Oregon&#8217;s cropping systems and diverse soils.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Delivered online by OSU Ecampus \u2013 the university\u2019s nationally ranked online education provider \u2013 the program will provide students everywhere with real-world, field-based learning experiences that connect students with their local natural and agricultural environments.<\/p>\n<h2>Crop and soil science comes to life in 3D, virtual reality<\/h2>\n<p>Courses utilize custom lab kits, 3D printed soil models, virtual reality, augmented reality and other advanced technologies. Lindsley <a href=\"https:\/\/sketchfab.com\/adamlindsley?utm_medium=embed&amp;utm_source=website&amp;utm_campain=share-popup\">uses photogrammetry<\/a> in his landscape analysis and soil morphology online courses to bring Oregon field visits home. His use of 3D printing solves the issue of soil structures breaking apart when lab kits were shipped to distance learners.<\/p>\n<p>The online curriculum includes a class in crop ecology and morphology, which features a virtual greenhouse that creates a hands-on experience for a global audience of future crop and soil scientists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re able to go in at any point in time from anywhere in the world, access this virtual greenhouse, see what the plants look like, rotate them around so they can get into the nitty gritty identifying characteristics, and then be able to apply that out in the real world,\u201d said the course\u2019s instructor, Alyssa DuVal.<\/p>\n<p>There is little education in crop and soil science available online, and Oregon State is a leader in the field. The program is expected to attract interest from industry employees and those at government agencies \u2013 such as the United States Department of Agriculture and its Natural Resources Conservation Service \u2013 who seek courses for professional development and advancement in their respective fields.<\/p>\n<p>Spring classes at Oregon State begin April 1.
