Gilman International Scholarship<\/a>\u00a0to study internationally during the 2020-21 academic year.<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship is part of a congressionally funded program designed to broaden the United States\u2019 participation in education abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Sanchez is a senior from Woodburn, Oregon, in the OSU Ecampus <a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/online-degrees\/undergraduate\/fw\/\">fisheries, wildlife, and conservation sciences online bachelor\u2019s program<\/a>. With seven honorees, OSU continues its trend of having\u00a0students accepted\u00a0at or greater than the national rate of 25 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The six other Gilman scholars from Oregon State are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cynthia De La Torre<\/strong> of Albany,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>senior in psychology and human development and family sciences, global health internship in Botswana.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Catie Boucher<\/strong> of Wildomar, California, junior in fisheries, wildlife, and conservation sciences, study-abroad program in Bhutan.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dayne Smith<\/strong> of Bend, junior in tourism, recreation and adventure leadership, study-abroad program at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rebecca Larrabee<\/strong> of Albany, senior in agricultural sciences at the LaGrande\/Eastern Oregon University campus, study-abroad program in agroecology and chemistry in Lyon, France.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Julia Zavala<\/strong> of Tigard, senior in honors biology, pre-medical internship in Argentina.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Metzin Rodriguez<\/strong> of Coos Bay,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>senior in bioresource research, language, culture and civilization program in Castilla y Leon, Spain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to the Gilman website, the scholarships support first-generation college students, students in the STEM fields, ethnic and racial minority students, students with disabilities, students who are veterans, students attending community colleges and minority-serving institutions, and other populations underrepresented in international study.<\/p>\n<p>Gilman Scholars whose international programs are postponed or canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic will have multiple options including deferral to the subsequent academic year, said LeAnn Adam, OSU\u2019s coordinator for National and Global Scholarships Advising.<\/p>\n<p>Since the Gilman program\u2019s inception in 2001, more than 31,000 Gilman scholars have studied in 151 countries around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State\u2019s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is supported by the Institute of International Education.<\/p>\n<p>At OSU, the National and Global Scholarships Advising office offers support to students to <a href=\"https:\/\/topscholars.oregonstate.edu\/\">apply for the Gilman scholarship and other nationally competitive scholarships<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\"><\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute read<\/span><\/span>Esmeralda Sanchez, an OSU Ecampus student in fisheries and wildlife sciences, will participate in a forest conservation program in Malaysian Borneo after being awarded a\u00a0Benjamin A.
