{"id":1736,"date":"2024-01-30T09:00:39","date_gmt":"2024-01-30T17:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/?p=1736"},"modified":"2024-08-13T13:57:00","modified_gmt":"2024-08-13T20:57:00","slug":"cultural-resource-centers-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/cultural-resource-centers-online\/","title":{"rendered":"Oregon State&#8217;s 7 cultural centers build community near and far"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Resource centers foster inclusivity and help students learn about different cultures online and on campus<\/h2>\n<p>How do you engage in the \u201ctraditional\u201d college experience if you\u2019re a student who learns online and doesn\u2019t have access to a physical campus?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a nut we\u2019re always trying to crack at Oregon State University Ecampus. We work endlessly to find new ways for online students to connect with the larger OSU community from a distance.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, Oregon State\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/dce.oregonstate.edu\/cultural-resource-centers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">seven cultural resource centers<\/a> make it possible for Ecampus students to engage with these vibrant, diverse communities no matter where they live.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s so much learning and connection that can happen through the cultural resource centers,\u201d says Whitney Archer, the associate director of OSU Diversity and Cultural Engagement. \u201cWe know that Ecampus students want their experience to be more than just taking classes and earning a degree. The centers are a really meaningful way to build a connection, and they are places to be seen and validated and uplifted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through relational experiences and <a href=\"https:\/\/events.oregonstate.edu\/department\/diversity_cultural_engagement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">events on campus and online<\/a>, the cultural resource centers provide opportunities to interact with students and staff with shared identities and learn about people of other identities.<\/p>\n<p>And given the current social crises domestically and abroad, these welcoming communities play a significant role in helping students navigate and confront challenging issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor students who are interested in social justice and working to create a better world, we\u2019re striving to do that by making a more just (institution), and there are a lot of skills folks can gain by being connected to the cultural resource centers,\u201d says Archer, who is also assistant director of the Hattie Redmond Women &amp; Gender Center. \u201cIt\u2019s where folks can think about their spheres of influence and being leaders and agents of change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here is a short introduction to Oregon State\u2019s seven cultural resource centers. We do this through academic, cultural, and social programming addressing the personal needs, academic excellence, and professional development of Asian and Pacific Islanders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Did you know?<\/strong> With its beginnings tracing back to 1980, the Asian Cultural Center was renamed as the Asian &amp; Pacific Cultural Center in 2003 to be inclusive of the Pacific Islander communities.<\/p>\n<h3>Lonnie B. We strive to deconstruct colonial borders\u2019 impact on Indigenous identities while also honoring the sovereignty of tribes. While protecting and preserving the rights of Indigenous people, we provide a sense of home\/community for Indigenous students that helps preserve their Indigenous identities while in college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Did you know?<\/strong> Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, is located within the traditional homelands of the Mary\u2019s River or Ampinefu Band of Kalapuya. Following the Willamette Valley Treaty of 1855, Kalapuya people were forcibly removed to reservations in Western Oregon.
