Here are six tips for success on exactly how you can set yourself up for greatness in your first term online with Oregon State. Set aside an hour of your time to complete these self-checks, and you\u2019ll be succeeding in no time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discover your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American author Simon Sinek came <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up with the concept of finding your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after feeling lost in his work. At its core, finding your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is about knowing what compels you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oregon State Ecampus success coach Bethany Ulman says, \u201cUnderstanding and exploring your motivation helps you in the beginning <\/span><b>and<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> keeps you on track during the times it gets rough.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re having trouble getting started with this, consider setting a five- or 10-minute timer to write down your thoughts on the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why are you pursuing this academic program?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are you hoping it will help you achieve?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What made this goal important enough to pursue now?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Keep those written answers somewhere that you\u2019ll see them regularly. Those driving forces can help you when you\u2019re feeling unmotivated.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Know your schedule<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You probably navigate work, spending time with family and friends and community commitments. You know how to make it all work, but adding school into the mix can be like trying to jam another piece of laundry into an already full washing machine. It\u2019s pretty easy to throw things out of balance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An easy way to evaluate how you\u2019re <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actually<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spending your time is to complete a time audit. You can do this by writing down your responsibilities hourly for a week. Once you finish your audit, go through and categorize how you\u2019re spending your time. Categories could include family, screen time, work, friends, hobbies, sleep, downtime or anything else you see emerging as a pattern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After you\u2019ve done all of that, take a look at where you can fit in online coursework. Be sure to answer these questions for yourself:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which categories could you spend less time on?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many hours do you have per day\/week to dedicate to school?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where do you see coursework fitting into your schedule? Consider highlighting or otherwise marking this time physically on your audit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What boundaries are you willing to set to protect your various time commitments?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allow yourself some flexibility in your schedule for unpredictable events or situations, too. Living a fulfilling life means you\u2019ve got to regularly work in some fun.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep yourself organized<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find your best method for organization. Write out your strategy for staying organized. Pro tip: Don\u2019t be afraid to adjust. If something isn\u2019t working, you can always take a new approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider the following, then write down a game plan using \u201cI will\u201d statements:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you prefer to manage your coursework?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you start the term by writing down every assignment from your syllabus with regular reminders, or would you prefer to review upcoming assignments on a weekly or monthly basis?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will you track assignments and tasks?\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will you use a paper planner, a whiteboard, a sticky note system, weekly to-do lists or an app?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you approach larger projects?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you prefer to take on and complete a big project all in one go, or is it easier for you to break up elements of an assignment? Setting smaller checkpoints and working toward a larger goal is a common method for success for most.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider how you might break down a writing assignment. It could flow something like: read the chapter, identify key points, create an outline, write the assignment, proofread, submit.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where will you study?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you prefer a quiet environment or a bustling one?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you able to leave home to study, or can you designate a specific space where you won\u2019t be disturbed?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The OSU Ecampus success coaches strongly recommend establishing a dedicated study space, if you\u2019re able, with your computer, course materials and assignment information all in one place.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explore your tools<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You wouldn\u2019t start a road trip without a map \u2013 or at least some idea of where you\u2019re headed. Similarly, you should brief yourself on Oregon State\u2019s important learning tools early in your first term so that you can confidently navigate your student experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few tools you should bookmark:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Canvas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is OSU\u2019s online learning management system. You\u2019ll use it for all of your classes for everything from syllabi to lectures to assignment submissions and more. Your Ecampus orientation happens on this platform, and you can get even more practice with our first-term success course (details below) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/learn.oregonstate.edu\/canvas\/student-tools\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oregon State\u2019s handy guide to the platform<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Beaver Hub<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is where you\u2019ll find all things administration. You can check out your class schedule, view your academic progress and contact important resources like your academic advisor, the Office of Financial Aid, and Disability Access Services. Get a brief overview through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uit.oregonstate.edu\/beaver-hub\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OSU Beaver Hub startup guide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Office365 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is OSU\u2019s official productivity platform. Office365 ensures students have access to essential programs like Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and, most importantly, <\/span><b><i>Outlook for your Oregon State email<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Check out this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uit.oregonstate.edu\/office365\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overview from University IT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to see all the services.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Oregon State Libraries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are an essential resource for topic materials and texts. As an Ecampus student, you\u2019ll have full online access to all <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/library.oregonstate.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OSU Libraries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as the physical locations in Corvallis, Newport and Bend. You can have books shipped to your home or access a huge repository of online materials. They even have a Canvas course to help you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oregonstate.instructure.com\/courses\/1772293\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">get to know all things OSU Libraries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>TutorMe <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is available exclusively to Ecampus students with five free tutoring sessions each week. You may not need help at the beginning of the term, but you should <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/services\/student-services\/online-tutoring\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">familiarize yourself with the service<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you\u2019re in need.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rally your support network<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having the right support matters. On days when you are struggling to find motivation or are dealing with heavy life events, it\u2019s essential to have a group of people you can lean on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identifying the folks in your corner right from the start of your academic journey can make all the difference. Ask yourself:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who are the people I can count on to cheer me on?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who can hold me accountable?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will I know that it\u2019s time to ask for help? What are some warning signs those around me might notice?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After you determine your people and your stress signals, reach out to them.
