A special Oregon State Ecampus council created a principles-based framework on how to incorporate AI tools responsibly and ethically into online courses, research and other projects.<\/p>\n<p>The resources aim to help create positive experiences for instructors and learners and are available online for all to use under a Creative Commons license. They include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An <strong>ethics statement and a set of principles<\/strong> to guide the use of AI in teaching and learning<\/li>\n<li>An <strong>AI decision tree<\/strong> to help faculty and staff decide if, when and how to use AI to support teaching and learning<\/li>\n<li>Considerations for <strong>how to revise assessments<\/strong> at various levels of Bloom&#8217;s Taxonomy<\/li>\n<li><strong>Practical strategies and early steps<\/strong> faculty can take to adjust teaching and assignments in light of new AI technologies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These guidelines were informed by Ecampus\u2019 own <a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/about\/mission-values\/\">core values<\/a>; the well-established ethics framework used by OSU\u2019s Institutional Review Board; and information shared by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanetech.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Humane Technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first of the seven principles calls on faculty and staff to <strong>be student-centered<\/strong>, meaning that decisions should be made based on whether AI tools can advance student learning while reducing any risks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGenerative AI tools are here to stay, and we want to ensure that we promote the use of them in ways that are consistent with university values while mitigating risks to students,\u201d said Karen Watt\u00e9, the Oregon State Ecampus senior director of course development and training.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis particular suite of resources gives us a very good start in working with faculty, and as AI tools continue to evolve, we\u2019re committed to revisiting this work and providing support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ecampus also identified three early steps faculty should take in order to adapt their individual courses and activities in the era of artificial intelligence:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Experiment with AI tools to test how they could impact the student experience.<\/li>\n<li>Revise academic integrity policy statement in syllabi.<\/li>\n<li>Begin planning design changes to course assignments.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The Oregon State Ecampus AI council consists of senior administrators, instructional designers, multimedia developers, web and IT professionals, analysts and researchers.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>You can find more <a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/faculty\/artificial-intelligence-tools\/\">practical strategies, recommendations and resources<\/a> on the Ecampus website.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"rfi-button\" class=\"button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/faculty\/artificial-intelligence-tools\/\">Browse AI faculty resources<\/a><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\"><\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute read<\/span><\/span>Oregon State Ecampus created a principles-based framework on how to incorporate AI tools responsibly and ethically into online courses, research and other projects.
