{"id":2394,"date":"2025-09-22T10:24:05","date_gmt":"2025-09-22T17:24:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/?p=2394"},"modified":"2025-09-22T12:35:20","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T19:35:20","slug":"advancing-meaningful-learning-in-the-age-of-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/advancing-meaningful-learning-in-the-age-of-ai\/","title":{"rendered":"Advancing meaningful learning in the age of AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>How Oregon State Ecampus revisited Bloom&#8217;s Taxonomy to help educators navigate the increasing prevalence of AI tools<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re an educator working today, it\u2019s easy to get overwhelmed\u00a0by the deluge of hype and information around generative artificial intelligence tools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But doing nothing, of course, isn\u2019t an option either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is the future,\u201d said Katherine McAlvage, associate director of faculty development and support at Oregon State University Ecampus. \u201cStudents have these tools in their pockets now. So what does that mean?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For McAlvage, the answer isn\u2019t necessarily simple, but it is reality \u2014 we must adapt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McAlvage is a member of Oregon State Ecampus\u2019 AI council, an interdisciplinary team that investigates AI tools and better understand their impact on education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur group read deeply about the educational implications of AI, and it quickly became clear to us that it\u2019s really hard for faculty members to condense all of this information and apply it to their course,\u201d McAlvage said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sub-group that McAlvage led, which included co-contributors Cub Kahn, Ashlee Foster and Warren Blyth, wanted to create a resource that could help faculty transition from a feeling of overwhelm to a place of greater confidence and action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To do so, they turned to a familiar schematic in education \u2014\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/faculty\/artificial-intelligence-tools\/meaningful-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloom\u2019s Taxonomy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Created in 1956 and revised in 2001, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cft.vanderbilt.edu\/guides-sub-pages\/blooms-taxonomy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this cognitive framework<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is known by educators around the world. The Ecampus course development and training team uses it as a tool to help faculty think through the concept of alignment \u2014 i.e.,\u00a0do your planned course activities align with student learning outcomes?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While acknowledging some limitations and criticisms of Bloom\u2019s Taxonomy, Oregon State\u2019s AI council subgroup recognized that it could provide a much-needed structure for evaluating AI capabilities and how they might impact the way students learn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a phase of extensive exploration and reading about the training behind AI tools, the Ecampus team created its own classroom scenarios and prompts and set about testing how generative AI performed across different levels of Bloom\u2019s Taxonomy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2655 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/assets\/Screenshot-2024-09-19-at-7.18.30%E2%80%AFAM.png?resize=744%2C574&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Bloom's Taxonomy revisited\" width=\"744\" height=\"574\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/assets\/Screenshot-2024-09-19-at-7.18.30%E2%80%AFAM.png?w=1582&amp;ssl=1 1582w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/assets\/Screenshot-2024-09-19-at-7.18.30%E2%80%AFAM.png?resize=320%2C247&amp;ssl=1 320w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/assets\/Screenshot-2024-09-19-at-7.18.30%E2%80%AFAM.png?resize=960%2C740&amp;ssl=1 960w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/assets\/Screenshot-2024-09-19-at-7.18.30%E2%80%AFAM.png?w=1488&amp;ssl=1 1488w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 744px) 100vw, 744px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite all of their investigative work, what they found surprised them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe sort of made the assumption that AI would be really good at doing the stuff at the bottom of the pyramid,\u201d McAlvage said. \u201cBut that\u2019s not actually how it turned out. For example, AI is actually really good at doing analysis at this time, which is considered right in the middle of that level of complexity.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what does that mean for the future of course design and the student experience?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For starters, this is<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the end of meaningful learning. But it does mean faculty have new considerations and decisions to make.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team synthesized their findings into a new version of Bloom\u2019s Taxonomy, offered under a Creative Commons license, which gives faculty concrete guidance on where they might want to review and amend their course design.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can download <a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/faculty\/artificial-intelligence-tools\/meaningful-learning\/\">this new resource<\/a> on the Ecampus website<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where the team further unpacks:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How students might already be using AI tools for learning activities and assessments, with relevant examples for asynchronous, online courses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The distinctive human skills that faculty can continue to emphasize and evaluate in learning, which may guide thoughtful revision of course activities and assessments<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/faculty\/artificial-intelligence-tools\/meaningful-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additional notes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for each level of the Taxonomy to help faculty consider how to adapt to teaching and learning in this new age.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McAlvage stresses that this is a resource for every educator \u2014 whether you teach in person, hybrid or online and regardless of whether you want to encourage, discourage or restrict the use of AI in your classroom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe don\u2019t, at the end of the day, have a preference for whether or not students should use AI in a class or not,\u201d McAlvage said. \u201cThere are legitimate reasons for both, and there are choices to intentionally and thoughtfully be made.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This resource is intended to serve as one guide, and it\u2019s clear from its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7110335639643992064\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">positive reception<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that it\u2019s resonating \u2014\u00a0with hundreds of people downloading the PDF every week and a recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/osuecampus\/status\/1703841994076979700?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">translation into French<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is not a forever tool. It\u2019s a product of its time, and we created it under a Creative Commons license for that reason,\u201d McAlvage said. \u201cBecause we can\u2019t see the future, right? We don\u2019t know how fast AI capabilities will evolve. So it\u2019s meant to be shared, and we\u2019ll work through this as a community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This revised version of Bloom\u2019s Taxonomy is one in a series of tools that the Oregon State Ecampus AI council created and released in the summer of 2023 to support educators as they navigate this new era in education.
