He guides faculty learning communities, facilitates workshops and webinars, and consults one-on-one with faculty. Prior to Cub\u2019s current position, he developed curriculum and taught environmental sciences and geography for Marylhurst University and Oregon State University. Previously, he was an educational writer and editor for the National Wildlife Federation and Virginia Tech. Cub earned a B.A. in Environmental Sciences from the University of Virginia, an M.S. in Marine Sciences from Louisiana State University and an Ed.D. in Technology Education from West Virginia University. Cub is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and has received the Society of Technical Communication Award of Achievement and the OSU Outreach and Engagement Award for Outstanding Achievement in Innovation for online course development and teaching.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Hometown: <\/h3>\n<p>Franklin, North Carolina, the \u201cGem Capital of the World\u201d<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>How long have you worked at Oregon State?<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Fourteen years. I taught geography on campus and through Ecampus until I became the hybrid course initiative coordinator for the Center for Teaching and Learning and Ecampus in 2011.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>What excited you about the opportunity to work for OSU Ecampus\/Center for Teaching and Learning?<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;I was drawn by the chance to work with many bright minds doing world-class work to advance teaching and learning in new ways.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Describe what you do in your role. <\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_277\" class=\"wp-caption wp-caption-265 alignright\" style=\"width: 265px\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-277 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/assets\/Cub-Kahn-2.jpg?resize=265%2C265&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Cub Kahn sits at a desktop computer wearing an OSU polo shirt.\" width=\"265\" height=\"265\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">As an OSU faculty member, Cub has received the Outreach and Engagement Award for Outstanding Achievement in Innovation for online course development and teaching, and was a finalist for the Loyd Carter Award for Outstanding &amp; Inspirational Undergraduate Teaching in the College of Science.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;I consult with faculty to redesign classroom courses as hybrid courses, which have significant online learning activities integrated with a reduced number of classroom meetings. Many students benefit from courses with a blend of face-to-face and online activities that extend beyond the traditional spatial and temporal boundaries of the on-campus classroom.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>What do you like most about your job as the hybrid initiative coordinator?<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Getting to know and work with literally hundreds of different people across the university who support student learning. In addition to the Corvallis campus, it\u2019s been a joy to work with OSU-Cascades, Hatfield Marine Science Center and Extension faculty.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>What do you wish others knew about your job? <\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;How satisfying it is to work with faculty to help them make their teaching more rewarding as they better engage their students.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>What made you decide to get into this field? <\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m passionate about creative work at the intersection of teaching and learning, technology and the future. This is it!<b>&#8220;<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"smartquote\">&#8220;<\/span>Imagine how much OSU can affect the world for the better if we treasure every day, listen to every voice and value every encounter!<span class=\"smartquote\">&rdquo;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>What do you believe is your greatest accomplishment in this position?<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s not my accomplishment, but I feel grateful to have been involved in faculty development efforts that have helped 10 OSU colleges offer 120 different hybrid courses on the Corvallis campus, with many more to come.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>What advice would you like to give to students, alumni, faculty and\/or advisors?<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;My advice is to make the most of this very moment. Imagine how much OSU can affect the world for the better if we treasure every day, listen to every voice and value every encounter!&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>What is one surprising thing about you that not many people know?<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;A lot of people may not know that I\u2019m a professional nature photographer. I\u2019ve published four how-to books on nature photography, taught dozens of photo workshops, and my work has appeared in magazines such as <em>Audubon<\/em>, <em>National Wildlife<\/em>, <em>Sierra<\/em> and <em>Backpacker<\/em>. These days I do it mainly for fun.
