{"id":49,"date":"2012-07-09T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-07-09T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/?p=49"},"modified":"2024-04-02T15:31:11","modified_gmt":"2024-04-02T22:31:11","slug":"public-health-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/public-health-2012\/","title":{"rendered":"OSU&#8217;s latest online program is a remedy for public health workforce issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CORVALLIS, Ore. \u2013 Oregon State University is answering the call of state officials \u2013 and addressing a nationwide need \u2013 by introducing an <a title=\"Graduate Certificate in Public Health\" href=\"\/online-degrees\/graduate\/public-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online Graduate Certificate in Public Health<\/a>, designed to provide flexible training opportunities for industry practitioners.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right; margin: 6px 10px;\" title=\"Crowded street\" src=\"\/images\/proprietary\/still-life\/public-health-crowd.jpg\" alt=\"Crowded street\" width=\"400\" height=\"247\" \/>A statement from the Association of Schools of Public Health shows that nearly 25 percent of the nation\u2019s public health workforce is now eligible to retire, and OSU officials say there is a shortage of capable workers in the field to fill the impending void.<\/p>\n<p>But the new certificate program, developed by OSU\u2019s College of Health and delivered online by OSU Ecampus, helps remedy the situation by offering professional development and a pathway to new career opportunities for public health practitioners.<\/p>\n<p>The program <a title=\"GCPH admissions requirements\" href=\"\/online-degrees\/graduate\/public-health\/admissions.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launches this fall<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had specific requests from the Oregon Health Authority and local practitioners to provide this certificate because county health administrators need a strong foundation in public health,\u201d said Tom Eversole, the College of Health&#8217;s project director of strategic development. \u201cThat is precisely what this program provides.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>OSU is home to the only college of health in the state, and its 20-credit certificate program focuses on the field\u2019s five core areas: epidemiology, health promotion and behavior, biostatistics, environmental and occupational health, and health management and policy.<\/p>\n<p>Eversole says <a title=\"GCPH online curriculum\" href=\"\/online-degrees\/graduate\/public-health\/curriculum.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Ecampus online curriculum<\/a> even enables business professionals, attorneys and others outside the field to make themselves more competitive in a global workplace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe focus of our work is really about people working in communities to help populations become and stay healthy,\u201d he said. \u201cThe scope of the education draws a strong emphasis from behavioral and social sciences that are critical to addressing the population-based health needs of the future, especially around issues of obesity, heart disease, stroke and diabetes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All of the online courses are developed and taught by OSU faculty, regarded as national and international experts in the field and whose teaching examples are informed by their own public health research.<\/p>\n<p>And with the workforce shortfall expected to exceed 250,000 professionals during the next decade, the demand for expertly trained practitioners has never been greater.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has been a lot of interest in public health of late, and people are looking for creative ways to address the needs of our society \u2013 asking how we can help people prevent disease and lead a healthier life,\u201d said S.
