I found her email address on the Bird Nerds website and asked if there was anything I could do for the club as an OSU Ecampus student, such as designing a newsletter,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_702\" class=\"wp-caption wp-caption-265 alignright\" style=\"width: 265px\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-702 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/assets\/Megan-2.jpg?resize=265%2C265&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Megan Blackwell participates in the OSU Bird Nerds club from her home in Ashtabula, Ohio.\" width=\"265\" height=\"265\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Megan was offered the OSU Bird Nerds publicity and public relations chair and internship chair positions for the 2016-17 academic year \u2013 even though she isn\u2019t physically on campus.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Megan was offered the publicity and public relations chair and internship chair positions for the 2016-17 academic year \u2013 even though she isn\u2019t physically on campus, or anywhere near campus for that matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best part of my experience has been making connections and being involved,\u201d she says. \u201cI enjoy communicating with all of the other officers. These students live 2,000 miles away from me yet I feel like I truly know them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Megan spends five to 10 hours per week working for the club, remotely connecting to meetings, updating its website and Facebook page, finding bird-related internships for the newsletter and creating event fliers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI became an officer because it gave me the opportunity to be a part of the leadership of a club at OSU,\u201d she says. \u201cI wanted to be able to show my leadership abilities to faculty, scholarship committees and future employers.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"smartquote\">&ldquo;<\/span>I enjoy communicating with all of the other officers. These students live 2,000 miles away from me yet I feel like I truly know them.<span class=\"smartquote\">&rdquo;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Megan is one of <a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/news\/orman-morton\/\">several online students<\/a> who have sought opportunities within on-campus clubs, recreational sports and cultural resource centers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEngaging with a campus community is a great way to enhance your overall experience as a student at Oregon State, no matter where you live,\u201d says OSU Ecampus Student Success Counselor Bethany Ulman. \u201cHowever, we\u2019ve found that many online students aren\u2019t aware that they, too, can make a difference by participating in a campus-based club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter realizing this, we began actively working to get the word out and helping connect our distance students with campus, and we\u2019re happy to say we\u2019ve received great feedback from both club presidents and online students who are excited for this partnership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently, more than 100 on-campus organizations have identified themselves as being willing and able to engage Ecampus students in their clubs from a distance.<\/p>\n<p>Ecampus students interested in joining an on-campus club, rec sports or cultural resource centers can find more information by visiting the <a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/services\/student-services\/organizations.htm\">student communities page<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/services\/student-services\/find-an-org.htm\">searching for an organization<\/a> that matches their needs and interests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you&#8217;re looking to get involved with a club, do not be afraid to reach out and ask if they&#8217;d be willing to let you do something for them,\u201d Megan says. \u201cEven if you can&#8217;t attend meetings via phone or webcam, you can still have an impact on the club.
