While these connections are well established for on-campus learners, little research has explored how they apply in online education.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/research\/study\/retention\/\">Learn more<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"wp-accordion-control\">Photovoice Study<\/h3>\n<div class=\"wp-accordion-content\">\n<p>This study invited 31 Oregon State University Ecampus students to share what it means to be an online learner through a photovoice project conducted in fall 2024 and winter 2025. Participants captured photos and reflections in response to prompts about their experiences, barriers, and opportunities in online education.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/research\/study\/photovoice\/\">Learn more<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"wp-accordion-control\">Student and Faculty Perspectives on AI<\/h3>\n<div class=\"wp-accordion-content\">\n<p>Mixed methods surveys examined online student and faculty perceptions, emotions, and knowledge about generative AI as it relates to course experiences, teaching, and learning.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/research\/study\/ai-survey\/\">Learn more<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"wp-accordion-control\">Exploring the Experiences of Online Instructors<\/h3>\n<div class=\"wp-accordion-content\">\n<p>Oregon State University Ecampus is fortunate to partner with nearly 1,000 Oregon State faculty. This interview-based study helps us to better understand the experiences and needs of these online instructors. This program provides high-impact experiences for online students that have typically only been available to campus-based students. The study was conducted with students of Oregon State University Ecampus. The project was partially funded by the National Research Center for Distance Education and Technological Advancements (DETA).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/OSU_DETA-Research-Brief-experiment_final.pdf\"><strong>The Impact of Closed Caption Use on Learning Outcomes in Fully Online Classes<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<p>This experimental study was designed to determine the impact of captioning use on student learning in a college-level fully online environment. The study was conducted in an online Biology course at Oregon State University. The project was partially funded by the National Research Center for Distance Education and Technological Advancements (DETA).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"wp-accordion-control\">Student Device Preferences<\/h3>\n<div class=\"wp-accordion-content\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/research\/study\/student-device-preferences\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: solid #ddd 1px;\" src=\"\/research\/files\/ecru-device-preferences-report-cover-232x300.jpg\" alt=\"Report cover\" width=\"65\" height=\"84\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/research\/study\/student-device-preferences\/\"><strong>Student Device Preferences for Online Course Access and Multimedia Learning<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nAs multimedia development efforts continue to become more important in online learning, gathering data regarding student device preferences helps us better inform the focus of course design efforts. This report is based on a survey of more than 2,000 students who took online courses at Oregon State University through Oregon State Ecampus. The results provide insight into students\u2019 device preferences for accessing their online courses and interacting with multimedia, such as videos and simulations. The study highlights some of the reasons why students who take courses online may prefer different devices for different educational purposes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"wp-accordion-control\">Report Reader Checklist<\/h3>\n<div class=\"wp-accordion-content\">\n<p>As online education continues to grow and develop as a field, the literature of online teaching and learning is also increasing. Each year, research study reports are published from vendors, distance education organizations, and researchers who hope to contribute to our understanding of the online education landscape. The ECRU is creating a free Report Reader Checklist as a resource to help report readers to assess the quality of what they are reading along six key areas: (1) content, (2) methodology, (3) sample, (4) reporting results, (5) transparency, and (6) reader experience.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/research\/projects\/report-reader\/\">Learn more<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"wp-accordion-control\">Research Preparation and Engagement of Instructional Designers in U.S. Higher Education<\/h3>\n<div class=\"wp-accordion-content\">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/research\/study\/research-instructional-designers\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/research\/files\/id-study-cover-232x300.png?resize=93%2C120&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Study report cover\" width=\"93\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/research\/study\/research-instructional-designers\/\"><strong>Research Preparation and Engagement of Instructional Designers in U.S. Higher Education<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nThis national study explores the research engagement and training of instructional designers in institutions of higher education. This study targeted institutional designers with a range of experience levels and training backgrounds in order to better understand how they use and engage in research on teaching and learning in their current roles, what previous training they have received in research methods and design, and whether they feel prepared to conduct research on teaching and learning in their current roles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"wp-accordion-control\" data-accordion-id=\"high-impact-practices\">&#8220;High-Impact Practices in Online Education: Research and Best Practices&#8221; edited collection<\/h3>\n<div class=\"wp-accordion-content\">\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ecampus.oregonstate.edu\/research\/files\/linder-high-impact-practices-v2-200x300.png?resize=100%2C150&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"HIP book cover\" width=\"100\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With chapters from a diverse set of authors representing a range of disciplines and institutional contexts, &#8220;High-Impact Practices in Online Education&#8221; fulfills a need for a research-based, comprehensive volume that provides faculty members and administrators with the current best practice literature on how high-impact practices are being implemented online to improve student retention and completion.
