Proposed research abstract<\/h3>\n

The research study proposed will use student self-reporting and student success throughout the course to answer the following questions:<\/p>\n

  1. In what ways, if any, does anxiety about mathematics affect students\u2019 success in undergraduate distance courses?<\/li>\n
  2. In what ways, if any, do students\u2019 perceptions about mathematics affect their efforts to do mathematics in undergraduate distance courses?<\/li>\n
  3. In what ways, if any, does a \u201cgrowth\u201d versus \u201cfixed\u201d mindset affect students\u2019 math anxiety and the level of success in undergraduate distance mathematics courses?<\/li>\n
  4. What tools can help improve confidence and success in undergraduate distance mathematics courses?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The results of this study could help online distance education mathematics instructors to address potential issues that may undermine students\u2019 learning in such courses. The research links to OSU\u2019s strategic plan Phase III to provide a \u201ctransformative education experience for all learners\u201d and to \u201cstrengthen impact and reach throughout Oregon & beyond\u201d. It will also provide \u201cleadership in research, scholarship and creativity\u201d, since the study uses previous research regarding math anxiety in traditional courses and could create new literature relating these ideas to distance learning. This also creates an opportunity for additional research in related distance education topics.<\/p>\n
