College of Liberal Arts Requirements

Students pursuing a degree in the College of Liberal Arts must complete the Liberal Arts Core and either the B.A. or B.S. requirements outlined below. A student may not use courses within her or his major field to satisfy requirements in the Liberal Arts Core.

LIBERAL ARTS CORE: REQUIRED FOR ALL MAJORS WITHIN THE COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS
Humanities Critical examination of influential traditions and ideas as defined by major scholarly works (includes English literature; ethnic studies; film studies; foreign language and literatures, including culture; history; and philosophy). 3 credits/1 course
Fine Arts Participation in or appreciation of different forms (includes art, music, theater, and creative writing in poetry, fiction, or drama). 3 credits/1 course
Social Science Scientific investigation and theory pertaining to human individuals, social groups, institutions, and ideologies (includes anthropology, economics, political science, psychology, sociology, women, gender and sexuality studies, and selected geography courses). 3 credits/1 course
Nonwestern Culture Study in any of the following areas focusing outside of Western culture—Africa, Asia, Russia, South America, Central America, Caribbean, Middle East, the Pacific, or Native North Americans. 3 credits/1 course
Additional Course From one of the preceding four areas. 3 credits/1 course
TOTAL CREDITS REQUIRED: 15 credits
 

What's the difference between a B.A. and a B.S.?

  • Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) requirements provide a breadth of preparation in the humanities, arts, social sciences and sciences beyond what is required in the baccalaureate core.
  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) requirements provide a depth of preparation in scientific and quantitative approaches to understanding in the sciences and social sciences beyond what is required in the baccalaureate core.
  • Both degree options require comparable demands of time and effort by students. See specific curriculum differences in the table below.
  • Student should confirm with their appropriate college for any modifications to the requirements.
COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS B.A./B.S. REQUIREMENTS
(Most CLA majors may choose one or the other. Students majoring in a foreign language are required to complete B.A. requirements with a second language.)
B.A. Requirement Second-year proficiency in a second language, including ASL, at the college level with at least a C–.
B.S. Requirement A minimum 15-credit block of science, computer science, and quantitative studies as follows:
  1. Any computer science (CS) course approved by the student's major school or department (3–4), and
  2. Any course from the College of Science approved by the student's major school or department except math (MTH) or statistics (ST) courses (3–4), and
  3. One of the following (8–12):
