Examines ways that social and cultural contexts have shaped the religious experience of Americans in different places and times. Focuses on religious developments, movements, groups, individuals, processes, dynamics, moods, material culture, aesthetics. Analyzes the unique role religion has played in the history of social and cultural inequality, political alienation, economic oppression, bigotry, hatred and violence in the United States.
