REL 211 – +Islam in the United States (4)
Examines the varying ways that Muslims, past and present, have navigated the complexities of American society. Explores diverse, lived experiences of Muslims in the US, beginning with the erasure of Islam within the trans-Atlantic slave trade and continuing all the way up to the current climate of integration, exclusion, and adaptations of and by Muslims within broader American society. Considers Islam’s ‘racialization’, forms and patterns of Islamophobia. Highlights the contributions Muslims have made to American society in art, entertainment, sports, politics, and intellectual life. This course may be subject to Enforced Prerequisites that restrict registration into the course. Check the offerings below for more information.
