MUS 309 – +Women in Music (3)

Explores the roles women have played in Western and popular music throughout history. Identifies contributions by women as composers, performers, producers, songwriters, patrons, educators, and consumers, and examines why their cultural labor was often ignored. Challenges the gendered “genius” mythology and addresses issues of representation, race, inclusivity, ableism, ageism, identity, class, and parenthood. Examines strategies to support women in music today and in the future. This course may be subject to Enforced Prerequisites that restrict registration into the course.
