CE 536 – Matrix Methods of Structural Analysis (4)

Explore the principles of using sound as a sampling tool and the applications of acoustics in a variety of marine disciplines. Examine the physics of underwater sound and sound propagation in the ocean, including the effects of oceanographic variability such as temperature/salinity stratification, seafloor/surface reflections, internal waves, turbulence, and presence of biological organisms. Break down the principles underlying acoustic remote sensing methods in oceanography including sonar, sub-bottom profilers, acoustic tomography, and passive acoustic detection. Explore modern research in acoustical oceanography, and the associated scientific literature. CROSSLISTED as CE 539/OC 536.
