Fall term 2011

Ready or not, here comes fall term. And if you're not entirely ready, don't fret: This issue of E-News will catch you up to speed on everything you need to know and all the latest OSU Ecampus news.

Most importantly, there's still time to register for fall classes, which start Sept. 26, or you can even add a course or two by visiting the Ecampus schedule of classes.

One way to begin the term on the right foot is with our getting-started guide. And new OSU students must set up their ONID account – which gives you access to Blackboard, provides you with your official OSU email address, billing information and more – if they haven't already done so.

Finally, order your textbooks online today from the OSU Bookstore in order to have all your materials by the time classes start.

Online tutoring, on the house

Online tutoringSometimes, you just don't have the answer to every question, which is why we're here to help. Every Ecampus student has access to free online tutoring in a variety of subjects throughout the school year.

You can receive help with your math curriculum, as well as writing, economics, biology, chemistry, Spanish and plenty more when you need it. Connect with live, experienced tutors from any computer that has Internet access, and you can even submit essays to be critiqued in an online writing lab. Access the free tutoring service within the "Tools" area of Blackboard.

Geography: The real reason you like airplane window seats

GeographyThe latest addition to Ecampus' ever-growing list of academic offerings is an online minor in geography, which gives students who are curious about how humans and nature affect the patterns on the Earth an ideal subject to study. (It'll be available in 2012.)

The Ecampus online geography minor creates an opportunity to learn about the world's oceans, the surface of the Earth, earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest, and environmental justice – and that's just scratching the surface of available curriculum. Offered in conjunction with the Department of Geosciences, a minor in geography fits well with any of the 13 Ecampus bachelor's degrees.

Military honor bestowed upon Ecampus

American flagFor the third straight year, OSU Extended Campus has been honored by G.I. Jobs magazine as one of the nation's Military Friendly Schools. Released this week, the annual list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that do the most to embrace America's service members and veterans as students.

Ecampus is proud to provide military servicemen and women with access to an OSU education no matter where they live, as well as other resources to help them thrive as online students while serving our country.

"The flexibility to watch the Ecampus lectures and complete the assignments when I have the opportunity is very compatible with my rapidly changing schedule," said U.S. Air Force space and missile officer Jason Watts, who is a Master of Radiation Health Physics student.

Military personnel may qualify for up to 45 credit hours for military education with Ecampus, and we offer G.I. Bill and Tuition Assistance opportunities. Go online for more details about Military Experience Credit.

Learn how to put a library on your laptop

Library booksIf you're new to OSU, are trying to figure out how to do your research from afar or simply want to know how to better use OSU Libraries, then Stefanie Buck is your guru. The Ecampus librarian is offering a new series of webinars for Ecampus students and faculty about using the library from a distance.

The first webinar is an introduction to the library that will shed light on library resources; how to search for books and journal articles; how to get books and journal articles delivered to you; and how to use Google Scholar in conjunction with the library resources. The 90-minute session is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Sept. 27 or at 5 p.m. on Sept. 29.

In October, Buck is offering webinars on database power search, keeping track of your research and more.

The webinars are all delivered via Adobe Connect. You don't need to install any software, but students will need a headset or speakers. To learn more and register, go to the Ecampus Library Webinars website and click on the "Fall 11 Schedule" tab. Email Stefanie Buck or call 541-737-7273 for more information.

Benny needs your help to rule the world

Benny the BeaverWith the fall sports season already under way, Benny the Beaver is strutting his stuff as the coolest mascot in the country. And all football season long, you have a chance to make the rest of the world realize it as Benny competes in the Capital One Mascot Challenge.

Vote for Benny each week as he goes head-to-head with some of the nation's best and wackiest mascots (including that weird Duck from Oregon). It's a fun way to show your school pride wherever you're located. As always, Go Beavs!
