HST 204 – +Incarceration Nation: Race, Inequality, and Imprisonment in US History (4)

Examines how the United States built a distinctive "carceral state"—a government based on policing, monitoring, surveilling, criminalizing, and incarcerating marginalized communities and individuals—from the colonial era to the present. Analyzes the intertwined development of systemic racism and carceral practices across American history, and how intersections of different forms of systemic oppression have shaped the experiences of incarcerated people. Explores the resilience of oppressed individuals and communities and the strategies they have used to dismantle the carceral state.
