Oregon State launches graduate business analytics programs in Portland

MBA, workshop aim to help managers better understand operations, markets

Oregon State University’s College of Business now offers new options for Portland-area residents interested in the field of business analytics.

After unveiling its MBA in Business Analytics track on the Corvallis campus last fall, the following options are now offered in Portland:

In addition, a hybrid Graduate Certificate in Business Analytics is expected to be available before the end of the year.

Business analytics is a fast-growing industry with demand for talented leaders. A recent McKinsey Global Institute report revealed that the United States faces a shortfall of up to 1.5 million managers with this skill set. These offerings from the College of Business will prepare Oregon State students for these roles.

“Our programs were created to help managers understand how to leverage advances in technology, data exchange mechanisms and visualization techniques to better understand their operations, customers and markets,” said OSU professor Bin Zhu.

MBA in Business Analytics

The MBA in Business Analytics is a 19-course, 60 quarter-credit hour program designed for working professionals in the Portland metro area. Students take a combination of core business classes and coursework in how to manage, mine, explore and analyze large data sets.

The program is offered in an online/hybrid format, combining the best aspects of traditional and online MBA programs. Students complete approximately 80 percent of coursework online and meet in-person with faculty and classmates twice per 10-week academic term. In-person classes occur on weekday evenings in the new Collaborative Life Sciences Building on Portland’s South Waterfront.

Those taking two courses per term will be able to earn their MBA in about two years. Students with an undergraduate major or minor in business may be eligible for an accelerated curriculum.

Business analytics workshop

Oregon State will host a two-day, intensive workshop on business analytics Aug. 22-23 at the Food Innovation Center in Portland. The workshop will be taught by the same faculty in the MBA and graduate certificate programs and serves as an overview of the topics covered in the more expanded offerings.
