Marcia Somer - Boundless Meaning
Ph.D. Education
Olympia, WA
What does completing your degree mean to you? How do you feel it will improve your life and career?
My doctorate has boundless meaning: First, it allowed me to research an area that I knew existed, and now it is confirmed. Second, I met many individuals who are valuable people, both personally and professionally. Third, the future career that I seek is now possible with my doctorate in hand. Fourth, I have become a better role model for those I work with, friends, and my two young children. I always tell people, "If I can do it, so can you."
Why did you choose to complete your degree online through OSU Extended Campus? What did you like about this method of education?
I liked the cohort approach as well as the once a month "classroom" experience. Meeting at Silver Falls with no cell phone or email access was wonderful. All of our attention was on school and the topics that we discussed. Class sessions became a "vacation" from my work life.
Did you have an instructor or advisor who was influential in helping you succeed as a distance student?
My advisor was Rich Shintaku. What a wonderful role model, leader and friend! He made himself available to me, and was willing to help whenever I needed it. He also allowed me the independence to always make the final decision. I could not imagine going through the dissertation process without him.
What will your Ecampus degree allow you to do that you were unable to do before?
I am hoping this Ph.D. will allow me to move onto a position as a vice president and president of a community college. Being an Asian-American female, the position of community college president is rare.
