Maya Moore - Fulfilling a Goal

Ed.M. Adult Education
Ashland, OR

Maya Moore

What does completing your degree mean to you? How do you feel it will improve your life and career?
It means I will have the necessary skills and qualifications to broaden my career and take it to a more fulfilling level. It also means I have finally fulfilled a long-term goal that I've had for over 10 years. Also, I will be the first woman in my family on both sides to receive a master’s degree.

Why did you choose to complete your degree online through OSU Extended Campus? What did you like about this method of education?
I chose this method for several reasons. First of all, I thought it was a superior program to the others I was looking at. The online aspect appealed to me because I didn't want to be restricted geographically, since my husband and I had been talking about moving back to Southern Oregon. Also, I felt it was important to stay in the workforce. And finally, we wanted to start a family, and at 36, I felt I couldn't wait.

Did you have an instructor or advisor who was influential in helping you succeed as a distance student?

Instructor Jennifer Webster really impressed me in her ability to "walk the talk," and her quirky and informal manner made everything seem easier. Also, Department Chair Darlene Russ-Eft really motivated me to work hard and try to understand some difficult concepts. I remember I was having a chaotic month and decided not to turn in one of her assignments. She emailed me that she hadn't received it, and I rallied myself to do the work. I just couldn't stomach underperforming in her class.

What will your Ecampus degree allow you to do that you were unable to do before?
I will be able to further my career as an adult ESL teacher and participate more fully in curriculum design, development and training. I will also be more equipped to broaden my career options to include adult basic education and community college education, as well as professional development.
