Standards and Principles
Ecampus Essentials
Ecampus Essentials: Partnering with faculty to develop high-quality online and hybrid learning experiences for Ecampus students is our goal. This document provides information about the research-based standards used at OSU to design online and hybrid courses, based on the Quality Matters Higher Education Rubric (7th Edition). All new and redeveloped Ecampus courses are expected to meet essential standards and are strongly encouraged to meet exemplary standards. Ecampus instructional designers support and partner with faculty to ensure standards are met.
Online Teaching Principles
Online Teaching Principles: Derived from research-based best practices, these principles are intended to supplement the QM Higher Education 7th edition course design rubric and the Ecampus Essentials to guide effective facilitation of online and hybrid courses at Oregon State University.
Regular and Substantive Interaction
Oregon State University faculty must ensure that their online courses meet U.S. Department of Education’s requirements for Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) in order for those courses to be eligible for federal financial aid. RSI is meant to distinguish “correspondence” courses (those with little or no instructor interaction, and ineligible for federal financial aid) from “distance” courses (those with significant instructor interaction, and therefore eligible for federal financial aid). Faculty interaction with students must be regular, substantive, and instructor-led. Please consult our RSI Quick Reference Guide for additional information about how the government defines the requirements, or reach out to our Faculty Support Team at EcampusFacultySupport@oregonstate.edu for assistance.
Intellectual Property of Materials in Ecampus Courses
Faculty retain the copyright for materials they create for use in Ecampus courses, unless other agreements assigning copyright to Oregon State University have been made. Oregon State University has a fully paid-up, royalty-free, perpetual, non-transferable, and non-exclusive worldwide license to Course Materials created under this agreement, with the non-exclusive right to revise and update the Course Materials as desired.
