Learning fundamental business theories is important. Learning those theories from people who know what it’s like to apply them in real-world settings is more than important – it’s crucial to your success in a world driven by business.

Oregon State University’s new online Graduate Certificate in Business Fundamentals provides students with that foundational knowledge by delivering courses taught by faculty with extensive, practical business experience.

The combination of relevant online coursework and expert instruction is a pathway to diverse career opportunities in any industry.

“Business is a skill we all use in our daily lives, trying to find value in the things we buy, balancing our checkbook, or taking a loan out to buy a home or a car.,” said Chuck Toombs, an Oregon State instructor with 30 years of experience in marketing, advertising and retail management.

“This certificate program will teach the details, the theory and how to apply them in marketing, accounting and finance among other fields so you feel confident in your everyday life about business situations.”

Business fundamentals brought to you by an accredited college

Offered by OSU’s AACSB-accredited College of Business and delivered 100 percent online by nationally ranked OSU Ecampus, this 18-credit program lays a foundation for mastery of key business concepts that learners can immediately put into practice within any organization.

Students have the option to study full time over the summer and complete all 18 credits – and earn an advanced business credential – in as few as three months. Or they can enroll part time and finish the program on a timeline that best fits a busy lifestyle.

Toombs teaches Creating Value in Exchange (BA 516) on campus at OSU, which is one of the five core courses in the online business fundamentals certificate curriculum. Like Toombs, the faculty who teach these classes online bring to the table a wealth of experience in business and industry.

“Theories are important because they answer the questions of ‘why’ in a controlled atmosphere,” Toombs said. “Applying them in the real world takes experience, plenty of wrong turns, but most importantly, understanding through experience gives one the confidence that they can do it too.

“This skill comes from within, and that’s why you need teachers with real-world experience.”
