Exam Proctoring: Proctoring Options at OSU
Online proctoring
Online proctoring requires the use of a webcam and microphone to monitor the testing environment and screen share to monitor your exam. Online proctoring typically uses security measures, which may include a scan of your testing environment and photo ID check. Online proctoring is only allowed by online proctoring services that have been vetted and approved by Oregon State University.
About Proctorio
Proctorio is an automated proctoring system that is integrated into Canvas and can be added to Canvas exams to help ensure exam integrity. Proctorio can be configured by faculty to record students using their webcam, microphone, or both, and to monitor web traffic during the Canvas exam. Faculty can review recorded information if there is a concern of academic misconduct. There is no cost for students or faculty to use Proctorio.
For students
Students will need to meet technical requirements to use Proctorio. If you are taking an Ecampus class, please review information about Proctorio in Ecampus courses. Additional information about using Proctorio as a student, including privacy and data security questions, is provided on the Proctorio FAQ for Students webpage.
Consider whether online proctoring is a good option for you. Review course information during registration to see if proctored exams are required. If you register for an online course with proctored exams, consider whether you would like to remove personal items from your test location prior to taking a test, take the test at a location other than your residence, or take the test with an acceptable in-person proctor if one is available in your community.
For all OSU faculty considering online proctoring
Determine whether online proctoring will be used for your course. If it will, the following steps are needed so that students are informed before registering:
All OSU faculty who plan to use online proctoring are required to include a notification for students in the Schedule of Classes before registration opens to students for the upcoming term. Contact your department scheduler to add the following statement in the Class Notes on the section (this must be posted by the due date noted below in order to use Proctorio in your Canvas course site):
This course requires online proctored testing, which may include testing fees and the use of security measures, such as a scan of your testing environment. Please carefully review online proctor test information at: ecampus.oregonstate.edu/proctoring
For questions about using disability-related accommodations with online proctoring, please contact Disability Access Services.
Faculty will also need to meet technical requirements to use Proctorio.
Please see additional information on the Ecampus faculty website to get started.
