Quality Matters at Ecampus
We can help make sure your course meets the highest quality standards in online course design.
Online Course Redevelopment Pathways
As of the 2025-26 academic year, Ecampus is adjusting how we approach online course redevelopment. Our goals are to create a more sustainable model, maintain quality in online courses, provide more flexibility to suit a variety of redevelopment needs and to collaborate with colleges to prioritize which online course redevelopments need the highest levels of support.
Redevelopment information
Ecampus recommends that all online courses undergo formal redevelopment every 4-6 years.
- Many faculty make updates to their online courses continually. This does not preclude the need for formal redevelopment. Maintaining a course does not reset the redevelopment “clock.”
- Faculty should consult with their supervisors if they are uncertain about whether they can edit their online courses. Some academic units, for some courses, may require that faculty limit the degree to which they edit online courses.
- Ecampus can support academic units with strategies for designing course shells that will be taught by multiple instructors (e.g., with hidden instructor notes pages that describe assignment goals, provide reminders about course structure, and cues for where instructors may wish to personalize content).
Three levels of funded redevelopment and one level of unfunded maintenance will be available and supported:
- Full two-term redevelopments
- Partial two-term redevelopments
- Partial one-term redevelopments
- Unfunded maintenance
Funding amounts will depend on the scope of the redevelopment and will range from $1250 for partial one-term redevelopments, and a max of $5k for full two-term redevelopments. Capacity for full redevelopments will be limited.
When requests exceed capacity, Ecampus will coordinate with College Associate Deans for guidance in prioritizing online course redevelopment resources.
Will exceptions be made? Yes, but they will be limited. College support is appreciated as we implement these changes.
Rationale
- For courses that have been kept current, a redevelopment does not require the same level of effort as a new course development.
- Provides more flexibility and allows us to better align development timeframes, funding levels, and the scope of the redevelopments.
- Frees up bandwidth and funding to make more resources available for new program development and for courses that really need full redevelopment work.
Pathway information
Ecampus offers several different pathways that faculty can consider for the redevelopment of their online course. Faculty are encouraged to select the option that best suits their goals for redevelopment.
