Course Development Roles and Responsibilities

Some faculty members new to online course development or new to OSU might be curious about how collaborative course development works. Who is responsible for what? The table below outlines expected roles and responsibilities.

Course Development Aspect

Ecampus Instructional Designer (and other Ecampus personnel, as needed)

Course development/redevelopment workshop

Complete DOC/ROC workshop

Facilitate DOC/ROC workshop, provide feedback, help to shape plans for the course to optimize for the online asynchronous format

Collaboration

Ongoing collaboration with instructional designer, and, if applicable, media developers

Ongoing collaboration with faculty member, bringing other Ecampus personnel in to the project as needed (i.e. media developer, videographer, testing coordinator, etc.)

Handling course content, accessibility

Providing course content to the instructional designer on agreed-upon timeline (i.e. outcomes, assessments, activities, discussion prompts, readings, videos, tutorials, lectures, demonstrations, etc.)

Adjusting course content as needed to meet research-based best practices in course design

Proactively selecting course content that is already accessible or able to be made accessible easily.

Build the content into Canvas, ensuring that materials are posted in an accessible format, using research-based best practices in course design

Provide recommendations to faculty about online class management that factors into design (i.e. how to set up asynchronous discussions to ensure they are robust, or how to decide whether proctored exams make sense for a given class)

Copyright and permissions

Track and cite origins of any third-party content so that Ecampus can obtain copyright permission if needed

Request copyright permissions, cover reasonable permissions costs

Administrative tasks

Such as textbook ordering, CRN requests

Reminders about housekeeping tasks as needed

Finalizing the course

Review course building in Canvas, proofreading

Explain Canvas functionality, as needed, and ensure faculty member is comfortable with the controls

Ongoing support

Request help/training as needed

Provide help/resources as needed
