Ecampus students are expected to be familiar with computers, the internet and email. You can use our computer checklist below see if your device meets the minimum requirements needed for Oregon State's online and hybrid courses in Canvas.

Microsoft Office 365 at no cost

All enrolled Oregon State students have access to the latest full version of Office 365 (Office 2016 Pro Plus) at no cost via the Microsoft Student Advantage Program. Learn more »

Required hardware and software

To use Canvas and fulfill Ecampus course requirements, OSU students must have access to the following:

  • Operating system (What are the browser and computer requirements for Canvas?)
    • Instructure products, including Canvas, run on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, or any other device with a modern web browser.
      • Canvas Student mobile app: iOS , Android 
  • Web browser (What are the browser and computer requirements for Canvas?)
    • Canvas supports the current and first previous major releases of the following browsers:
      • Chrome 
      • Firefox 
      • Edge 
      • Safari 
  • Internet speed and computer specifications
    • A broadband internet connection (fiber, cable, DSL or similar)
    • A sound card and speakers/headphones
    • Adobe Acrobat Reader 
  • Virus protection software
    • Up-to-date virus protection software
  • Other software
    • An email account – OSU provides Microsoft Outlook email to students as part of Microsoft 365
      • Note: Ensure mail from OSU and Ecampus is not automatically blocked
    • Word processing software – OSU provides Microsoft Word to students as part of Microsoft 365
    • Some classes may have specific requirements for additional software. These requirements will be listed in the course syllabus.
  • Webcam
    • Webcam and microphone
      • A functioning webcam and microphone are required for Ecampus courses that provide online proctoring. For more information about online proctoring privacy and security, please visit Proctorio's data security and privacy pages.
